AT THE CLOSE OF THE YEAR

The knell of the departed year swiftly comes. As the world pauses upon the midnight hour, To feel the sweeping hand of Father Time. Where melancholy moonbeams flood the night, is heard - A sigh! A mournful breath, like a cloud, resting upon the clear velvet sky.
Placidly through the heavens - a young spirit comes, Like Spring or bright Summer; Then turning, as seasons turn, to solemn form in Autumn, Changing, thus, to breathe the cold aged locks of Winter To season's end.
It is time for memories, for tears, a spectre unleashed, With shadows past, and shadows yet to come; Whose tones are like the wizen'd voice of time, But time knows not the weight of sleep and weariness All faded, like a wreath of myth the years gone by; To fall within the dim land of dreams.
