One thousand paces To the center of this stark landscape. Numb toes crunch the virgin frost, Footsteps are swallowed and erased In a stubborn defiance of my existence. The wind is bitter, A thorough snatcher of warmth and colour, That steals away the coral and peach from my skin.
This tree, once majestic, is dying. Rime-ridden and withered roots; Branches that fold in on themselves; A bole so cracked and blackened You wouldnt believe this tree had ever been young.
I climb it, Imposing as it is, Finding footholds in the knots and contortions Scarring the bark. My seat resplendent in the brittle Curving branches, commanding a view Of bleak nothings to the horizon.
My fingertips stroke the smallest twigs, Coaxing whispers fall from my lips. Laying my head on the branch My own pulse throbs resonantly In a heartbreaking solo.
My sleep on the branch Is dark and troubled with nightmares Of falling down and down Without ever hitting the floor. I am woken by a brilliant light with Warm and radiant beams That work celestially, at once Stirring and enveloping.
The frost is melting, Slowly, yes, but beautifully Towards me. Small vibrations Hum in a mellifluous voice Of growth and promise.
The transformation is startling. Cracks are sealed back together, Aching joints are stretched, straightened, And life, brilliant life is showing once again.
A fallen carpet of flawless white blossom Gives way to a coat of cerulean leaves, Whose gentle rustling against me Sews one thousand of your kisses In my hair.

A well composed poem with beautifully drawn imaginary romantic vision, specially: -
"The frost is melting,
Slowly, yes, but beautifully
Towards me. Small vibrations
Hum in a mellifluous voice
Of growth and promise."
Just Wonderful...
FRANCO.

WOW! Dom, this is extraordinary .. truly!
What beautiful metaphoical transformation. I am blown away!
I could not begin to pull any one line, or point any one stanza
outside of the rest, for I was captivated and drawn into each
and every word .. exceptional piece, my friend.
And that last line is so excruciatingly lovely. It could make
a heart (not frozen), melt for sure !
Thank you for sharing this .. I am familiar with the emotions ~

This is by far my most favourite of all favourites. I love the tree and your capture here is glorious to the essence of its welcoming beauty. So many times I've ached to climb again and nestle into its branching arms. Memories of youth when it would seem part ape, I barely spent time on the ground.
Mastered and presented like the true poet you are. |
