Three summers ago on a sticky August night, I lay with insomnia on my bed Dreading those tolling death bells Of the loudly ringing telephone. Still it sounded around 4 a.m., And I knew that all was lost. The hospital said, She slipped away, Slipped away in the middle of the night.
I tried to choke back tears that I couldnt control Attempting to contain my composure coolly, But the dam broke, and those tears were a river Of good times past and cherished memories. Each memory was of this beloved woman, Grandma.
The dark dismal funeral offered very little solace. Black suits and dresses were nothing she would enjoy. She lived her life with such animate liveliness, Colorful like the flowers she would grow in her garden. Her smile was bright like the sunset from her porch. Whenever I hear the phrase kind old lady, No one but her pops into my head.
The day that she was buried, I took my final walk with her Up a sloping path, into a short-grassed green shady glen. It was a place I am sure she visited before And asked the same questions that I had. So we laid her to rest beside, my grandpa, Saying a prayer for her departed soul. Then, it was time to say good bye. Oh how that cloudy day stays with me!
It is hard for me to remember her when the weather is dreary. Because all I can think of is that depressing good bye. So Ill remember her when it is sunny With the light as bright as her smile. Ill pledge myself not to forget the good times Ive had basking in the cheerful light of her countenance, And never let those clouds disrupt my sunny days. Because now she is in heaven, and she is my eternal sunshine.

My dear Mark .. what a beautiful tribute to one who will always
shine brilliantly for you. I've lost both my grandmothers,
and though I know not of the pain you went through, and
continue to feel, I can still say I relate on a personal level.
Allowing our loved ones their eternal rest is never easy, but
that you write with such beautiful remembrances of love
and tenderness is testament to all, that our lives are eternally
touched by those we love. And when we hold on to that, how can
we be sad?
Beautifully written, my friend. A wonderful wonderful piece!!
