The Morse Code of Eternal Dreams

Contributed by Silent-No-More on Wednesday, 11th July 2007 @ 03:34:16 PM in AEST
Topic: DreamsandWishes

The dirt embedded beneath my fingernails -
so perfectly, so fully now,
[I could grow things there
but for the lack of sunlight]
I raise my hands above me again, certain this time
Ill break through.
I have mastered the art of shallow breathing,
parting my lips just barely and just long enough
to draw life in one infinitesimal dose at a time;
dose after dose after tiny dose meticulously spaced
with long, breath-holding pauses in between...
my very own near-morbid Morse code.

My eyes, useless in the unforgiving dark,
surrender to the images that are born of blindness.
I am in a house, bare foot and barely dressed;
half awake. I am smiling.
The smell of fresh coffee fills
the room, my tomb, as a gentle breeze
[that cannot exist here]
drifts in through an open window
and dances across my skin.

Another night is setting in.

I can hear rainfall and give myself
temporary permission to believe that I can
feel its moisture seeping through
to wet my fingertips - promptly
forgetting that I meant it
to be momentary thing.

In the dark, I feel the air warm
between us as you lean into me.
The beautifully familiar feeling
of your head laying itself to rest
upon my chest as the storm moves in,
feels like coming home.

For a moment, Im no longer alone.

Behind you, my fingers continue to
work the earth. Their scratching, the patter
of rain, your heartbeat, my Morse code
fuse into a twisted, endless rhythm.
Somewhere above [beyond this place]
the trees bend themselves to listen.

The line between what is and is not
fades as life moves on without me.
I am suddenly certain your hair is grayer
than the last time I held you
even my worthless eyes cant manage
to deny the truth of this.

I pause and in Morse code, I wish.

The dirt embedded beneath my fingernails -
so perfectly, so fully now
I raise my hands above me again

the extreme of depth...here. This made me feel what I feel at times, yet I do not know if I call it a dream or wish, for myself. The "whole " write poured out. It gave images of soloum peace, yet dark hidden hurt. Loved the piece alot. Thanks for letting us, read/.

Nothing I say would do this justice. There is so much depth to it, I have read it twice and will read it more. I cannot pick one line but may come back to do that. Great job

Being claustrophobic as I am I just kept wanting to scream....dig, dig...
I loved the line somewhere above the trees bend themselves to listen.
It rang true and descriptive enought to give me a panic attack and yet I couldn't stop reading it.
Well done...........super Title.

Ummm This is about a horse, right?
heheheh seriously,
wow...the idea that it exists there above you, freedom from the close cloying trappings of living, the lack of and shortness of breath....I too want want for a full, deep breath, even just one before being pushed back under...

Snempy, the smooth back and forth segue between sensation and imagery, feeling and place makes this the best existential poetry I've read here for a long time.

This one slipped me back into the dark musings of Sylvia's mushrooms and her black dog claustrophia, ala The Belljar and, the resolute truth that even the ties that bind constrict as they comfort, yes, even as they slowly unravel. Time may be a fire in which we burn, but earth is an apt metaphor for this complex struggle.

S.

A stunning poem, you have woven together different feelings and different layers of existence masterfully.
I felt the claustrophobia too, the dark and damp, and I actually now want to leave my computer and go for a walk free from these walls (although certainly not until I've finished commenting!). Its wonderful that a poem can do that to you, and its wonderful that you have the skill to write such a poem!

Take care,
Dom
