Anthony's Entreaty

Contributed by Nazmythian on Friday, 17th August 2007 @ 02:47:28 PM in AEST
Topic: SongLyrics

Cant you see what Ive become?
Just look at all the things Ive done.
Still, Im standing in your shadow
even after all this time.

Its not the life you hoped Id lead,
but I just couldnt live your dreams.
This life chose me,
how could you be so blind?

And my brothers were no different,
they each heard another call.
So why is it me
you ask to take the fall?

Im not you!
Ill never be!
What will it take to break you,
make you finally see?

This is my life!
Its who I am!
And you made me, raised me
up to be this man.

I cant follow in your footsteps,
but by your guide Ill live my life,
and one day Ill maybe shine
with my own light.

I might touch the hearts of millions,
though if I only reach but one
I pray youd say to them, with pride,
Hey! Thats my son!

But until then,
try father, please
to find that space someplace within you
that still believes

in dreams
and
me ~

Additional author's note:

OK, this is going to be like attempting to describe... accurately, the taste of chocolate, to one who has never partaken of such a treat.
This is the same voice I have heard singing "Small" and "Doubting Destiny". I have been sitting on another post, waiting for... something... I wasn't certain just what, until this began to formulate itself within my head. This had to come first. Anthony is a fictional grandson of an American immigrant. The era seems unimportant thus far. He is torn between his family duty and his dreams. With this entry, his dreams appear to be winning.

I can not say why, but for some reason it seemed important that I share the way, at least slightly how this sounds.

Wow, I am in awe. Sure I can write poetry, but only generally about me, or those closest to me, but this, a glimpse into a fictional story that means so much....wow...,

Nazz,

this write touched a deep chord within me.
It is so very real and I relate it Anthony in this write...... thus me in the female version being the dreamer, free spirit and adverturous one in my family..... That in which my dad will never understand...... never seeing eye to eye on much of anything...

I loved how you put this together... Of course all of you writes do reach out and I love them..

Bravo, bravo! Ill toss a rose or two for this one.

Michelle

I really enjoy writing fictional poetry because it allows you to explore ideas and events from another person's stance and you can really get inside that character's mind.
I feel you've done this here. You know this character, deeply, and it shows. This could be real, and indeed for some people it is real. What I mean is that even though it is a creation of your mind it is highly relatable. I feel like I understand this poem even though I haven't experienced it (my family are extremely supportive of me) and that is what makes this piece wonderful. The emotions are alive in this.

So sorry to have rambled, I got a bit carried away!
Dom

What a plea, I am pleased to see that you are still writing Naz, I have been away for a long time. I now write mainly Fairy-Tales for children. As with all of your work less than top marks would be an insult to a great writer. All the best from bern.

Very well done, Naz.

Bringing home the idea that often, even though there are other siblings, ONE child is often chosen to carry a parent's dreams. Often those dreams conflict with the child's own path in life.

As parents, if we're fair, we won't interfere -- regardless of our own wishes.

Blessings, J.

A wonderful story, Naz....but to hear you sing it, to hear the raw emotion...I would of loved to hear a little acoustic guitar in there. You sort of reminded me a little of Cat Stevens....and maybe a little of Harry Chapin Carpenter. You never disappoint me with your writings, and as always when I start to read you, I never know just what to expect, except that it is going to be good.
Peace and hugs,
Laura
