I have never made your acquaintance but you have seen me around. Every time you take the train downtown and pass me on the street, pleading for your charity, asking for your scraps to eat.
Im in the schools in the empty bellies of the children trying to feed their minds. Im in those commercials you despise The ones showing kids picking through the trash to find a meal for their family like a half rotten piece of fruit Images so cruel, you have to shut your eyes
I live in those make believe places in your mind Countries that dont really exist in a world as affluent as your own Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Haiti; surely not the manufacturing towns off Interstate 80
One thing you didnt know I live next door. Im the empty plate of the mother who had to choose between dinner and her sons asthma medication. Hidden so meticulously to spare you any sense of obligation.

Beautifully written. Very though provoking and striking. Something that would do well as a read for an add for a charity organization? Loved the ending. Memorable. |
