The Great Spirit

The desert curled its warm tongue And called my name A whisper deep into the night Opening out upon the blistering sands Her heart lay sticky and bleeding.
The Indian stayed his steed His throat was dry and raspy Casting medicine to the wind Answering in wolf-call whispers longing So I went his calling wandering way With feathers in my hair.
We rode that day, Into the night The Indian and I. He did not smile Weathered away in sandstone faces His, Bronzed and matted With appraising eyes Seeking the broken trail Tracking the Great Spirits shadow Fluttering in the Devils dust.
