It is said that to the west of our Ancient city, its dirty buildings & Crowded streets & over the far Mountains & outlands & beyond the forests & then the seas, live a race of lost people. The Ant people my father calls them. He says long ago we were all one people, Until some of us grew wings & moved to the hives & catacombs we now know & others spread across the Horizon to seek fortunes elsewhere.
He says these people live in houses around Communal nests & all are rich & own lands. He says each of them feed off or depend on One another, yet live separately in their own Chambers on large beds with many pillows & blankets. Father says they worship a god & that they have a Common purose to their lives, yet he says that none of Them know this about the others & because of this live Lonely sad lives, for all their gifts. He says Each is suspicious & scared of the others & for his own, He says this makes them dangerous. For father says that if you disturb their nests or Purpose or enter their garden, they will attack You & kill you & eat you alive & kill you in their Nests to make themselves stronger.
Father says this is what happened to my Uncle Grasshopper who visited their strange & busy Lands, without the disguise that all who travel There must wear. He says they are easily lulled & peaceful if you appear to them as one of them. Father says they are the most powerful people In all the gardens of the world, for although Only interested in themselves & their kind, He says they are so powerful & there are so Many of them that they can march back over The horizon in times of hardship or danger & conquer the world, & rebuild in their image. He says they hate change. He says even the spiders Are afraid of them.
Father says the Ant people just feed & Build & grow, they don't understand the Cricket's Song, don't see the point for wings, laugh at the Moth's eternal obsessions & hate the Butterfly's Colours, saying they are ugly dangerous & evil. He says everything they don't do they call sin & Sin is their only law, they fear their god & he Tells them what to do. Father says they are Grasshoppers without imagination & bees without Honey, flowers or wings, Spiders without Thread & snails without the serenity of a shell.
Father says that although we must be aware of The Ant people, we must not fear them, we must Try to understand that they only do as They have always done & that that is the same As we do, but I can't understand how that is.
He says forgive them their folly as they Hoard & devour, the practical waste much, He says we fly, they walk. We kiss the tall flowers, they hug the flat earth, As we like nectar they need flesh. Father says Always remember the same sun nouurishes us, as them & if we'll never reach it how could they? (they don't Know how to fly)
He says be a happy little Honey Bee & gentle in the kind summer & happy in your golden beams & honey dreams. He says this is what our Ant cousins have forgotten, Have faith in the path of pollen.
