Another Night in the Tonkin Gulf.
Silently sliding, Grey steel gliding, At darken ship Show of light, no blip. Smell of jungle, Turrets slowly rumble. Night is stygian black, Perfect for attack. Guns tight, Forms appear in sight. Salvo alarm, guns free, Pointer locks firing key. Fire for effect, two rounds, Then, 100 boats we pound. Nights quiet shattered, People and boats tattered. Sweat streaming, Over the guns hear the screaming. Hefting shells. Our great guns their death knell. Mindless killing, Body count chilling. Rings of flame With explosions came. Turning night into day, Flashbulb images of they. Hundreds torn asunder Disintegrated by our thunder. Guns tight None left to fight. Barrels to hot to touch, Ears ringing too much. All black and quiet again. 1000 souls left this earthly plain. Glide away In the dark Images still there, stark. Tomorrow in Nam it starts over, The greyhound again, the deadly rover.

The hardest thing to write about are things like this. I put a little of it in metaphorically time to time. Very strange how others get things that you may or may not have intended to mean....
I find this to be visceral and tense, not as perhaps that moment, but I can smell the CLP and cordite. I can feel the humidity and tension.
Extremely well written. I hope to read more of your stuff.
Thank You for sharing this,
Steve |
