I killed a rat in the shed last night A dark murky figure in the crescent moon light I pinned him with a hoe to the cold dirt floor And squeezed him until he drew breath no more
He squealed when I did it and it caused me to freeze So clear was his utterance, he cried the word please I stood there and shivered in the mid summer heat Then hoe still in hand, made a solemn retreat
To my chair by the fire, seeking peace I did flee But I couldnt escape from his innocent plea And I sat there in mourning until the fire went out Waking a rat, and feeding my doubt
