Rain pounds against the windshield
Drumming its finger incessantly
Like an impatient lover
The child in the back silently weeps for a loss he does not yet understand
The man behind the weal stares ahead
His gaze icy
As if with his eyes alone he could match the fury raging beyond the glass
The woman sits next to him
As is her place
Staring out into the black
Dreaming of a future that will never be
The die has been cast and the lot tallied
Slowly she turns and looks at the man who stole her heart
Eyes glassy, awash with desire
He feels her eyes upon him but stares irresolutely on
Hardening his heart against the rush of longing
Her hand reaches out
As if to touch him
But then stops
For she too has learned to hate
Her look of longing turns to one of scorn
Sneering she turns back to the window
Safe in her shell of hate
There is no going back to the way it was
To much pain for love to grow
