Up the side of the hill we climbed Up the hill to Mount Hope Once at the top, hopped the graveyard's fence And threaded through the tombstones Until we were there Under a Dogwood, with its petals blowing So soft in the wind I lay down beside him, looked up at the sky At soft wisps of clouds, and pink petals fluttering Down on us like rain The only sound we hear is the breeze through the Dogwood And the peaceful stillness Of five hundred sleeping friends Resting below us We turn to each other, our eyes meet and fix One of his eyes squints from the sun I move closer to block out the light A thousand seconds later Of talking about nothing The silence finally settles And there we are again Closer, closer His warm breath on my face He softly kisses the tip of my nose I aim for his cheek But he catches my lips with his, and it begins Slowly, gently We draw closer together Fiercer, stronger The sunset drops low, and we enter the twilight Of where bad and good are smudged and disappear like mist I cradle his head in my arms, and pull him closer He follows and his whole body Presses against mine And all I can feel Is the energy When right and wrong fade And two intelligent people For a moment, lose their minds And are lost in each other When no thoughts can be heard But "closer, closer..." When you are powerless to the passion, so you give up Succumb to the feeling As he hovers low over you, held in his arms And the tangle is hopeless And the pink dogwood petals are caught in your hair And caught in his hair And raining down on you Trying to blanket you And you can't even breathe Because you haven't come up for air Until with one final press You both fall away Panting for breath Heads turned away Because when you look back He's there And like drunk on a potion, neither can stay away And you come back, close together And he catches you up again Ebbing, pulsing Your mouth is in his as he presses against you And you press harder because you have no mind The heat and the weight of him on you All you can feel Is his body tensing, the little sounds he's making And both of you breathing Until the toll of the church bell Snaps you back to this world Calling you to come pray And makes you fall away And brush the petals out of your hair And stand up and go Like two intelligent people Back over the fence Down to the church But he grips your hand tightly And you think that you know That above the graves of five hundred souls An energy pulsed through a place that was dead And you had for a moment, if only a moment An etching of paradise As the moon comes up over Mount Hope.
