the night my father died

I remember the night my father died
Those moments stay with me with a Zen-like clarity
August 16th, 2005
I was starting high school the next day
I couldnt sleep
It was 11 o clock
My mom seemed to be fine with me staying up
She seemed, pre-occupied
The cops had shown up at my house earlier at around 3 o clock
But I thought it had something to do with the inner city kids
That my dad had gone off with
They were going on a spiritual retreat
They were friends
At 11:15 my sister came downstairs to watch TV
I told her to go to bed
She refused
She felt like something was wrong
I heard a noise from upstairs
Mom uncle aunt and family friend walked down
Looking hollow
He crashed his car
He died
No was all I could say
Like white gas
It all erupted
And burned
In a matter of seconds
I walked around waiting for the explosion

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
