Twilight Under The Old Oak Tree

Holding hands once more, they ambled....
Through memories and pastures green
Past the stream, toward the shade of the Old Oak Tree
He set down a blanket, and slowly sat....
Moulding his back into the warm, knowing bark
His gesturing gaze, inviting her to lay beside him
Then, resting her head upon his lap, he caressed her shoulder
A lock of silver hair tickled her cheek, as the soft breeze embraced their moment
The tranquility of Mother Nature's opus
Soothed away every care, every line....
Whilst the bountiful meadow, Alive and untouched
Danced across the reflections in their eyes
Above them, the love heart with their initials, like an epitaph, carved into the bark
Whence childhood sweethearts they became....
With subtle breath, inhaling the delicate wisdom of nature's engulfing abode
Smiling together, they sighed..........
Then fell upon a sweet, eternal slumber
At One, At Peace, At Last.....

Hi L,

Nice to see you writing again.

A warm and gentle little story that teaches us
that the power and endurance of love is ageless!
