All I Wanted Was Peace

Once upon a late afternoon,
I pranced outside where peace resides.
My depressed heart eager to beat a happy tune
one peaceful beat after another
until...
my eyes see a sad sight--a dead squirrel.
Flies hover greedily across his furry corpse.
Tears begin to downpour from my eyes;
Why did this cute squirrel have to die?
I sob and angrily glare at birds flying happily;
why are they happy when this squirrel has died?
Then I see a Monarch butterfly flutter delicately
and I realize death is a part of life.

A harsh reminder, summed up in your last line.
And butterflies should know - don't they have a
maximum lifespan of 48hours?
Nature is our constant reminder, and you've
captured this precisely.
