Four glasses, each of different width and height, stood upon the kitchen counter and conversed with each other one night. One, nearly filled to it's rim, he stood with pride and glee. The others were not as fortunate, for empty were the last three.
The full glass boasted. My brothers, I have a use and a purpose, he said to the others. For each night our owner chooses me, while there you three stand...empty as can be. Within you each there is only air. Do you not long to be filled with something, or do you not even care? He continued, One more question I pose to you. How can you alter this, what can you do?
Of course I long to be filled, to be of some use. To have this hollowness replaced with water, milk, or juice. Yet each night you are chosen for this task. I understand I have no control over that. But I will not become discouraged, no, I shall stand here in faith. Believing one night I will be chosen. Therefore I choose to wait.
A noble response, the full glass toned. When suddenly the next empty glass moaned.
Like you I've been in the owner's possession quite some time. I haven't one chip, I'm still clear, and I still shine. Each night though he passes me by. Yet you always manage to catch his eye. How I wish he favored me, as does he you. Rather then tell, I'll show you what I'm going to do. The empty glass moved closer towards the counter's edge. I can no longer bear being empty...I'd rather be dead.
The other glasses watched as he shattered upon the floor.
The full glass gasped. What a drastic thing to do! Turning towards the last empty glass he asked, will you do the same too?
Indeed not! I have another course in mind. They don't see the real problem, they're both blind. It is your fullness that has caused us each to become blue. Inorder to accept my emptiness, I simply must rid myself of you.
With a mighty shove the full glass fell. That my friends, is the end of this tale.
