OLD COWBOY He entered the Church, just before the service began. Seated himself toward the back, by the doorman. An older man, attired in jeans, denim shirt, and boots worn and ragged. Carried his "dog eared" Bible, and well worn hat, both aged.
This church was located in an exclusive upscale neighborhood. It was the largest, and most beautiful church he'd ever seen, and he thought it was good. Expensive clothing, and fine jewelry, Immaculate people with no hair out of place, to the Neth degree!
When the Cowboy took his seat, others moved away from him. His heart hurt, he felt grim. No one greeted him, spoke, or even gave him a welcome handshake! They were openly offended by his appearance, another heart ache!
As the old cowboy was existing the church the preacher asked him if he would do him a favor? "Before you come back in here again, have a talk with God the Father. Ask him what would be appropriate attire for worship in church?" The old cowboy assured him, he would do some research.
The next Sunday he showed up for church again. Same ragged jeans, shirt, boot and hat, then sat near the doormen. Once again, he was shunned, and ignored! He said a silent prayer, "I know you wouldn't ignore me Lord!"
After praying he raised his head to see the preacher approaching his seat. He was startled, and could hear his own heartbeat! The preacher said, "I thought I asked you to speak to God before you came back here." "I did Sir," replied the Old Cowboy. "He made it quite clear too.... He said He didn't have a clue as to my attire. He said that He'd never been in this church, and, to be, had no desire!"
I had to write this poem, as this actually really happened to me. I know how that Old Cowboy felt, and with him I most heartily agree!
That preacher should read God's Word....... It says, "God does not judge a man by his outward appearance, God sees what the heart is?" ~1 Samuel 16:7~ July 16, 2010 I received this in an email with no author The poem is mine

I lived in Arizona for a time, and met quite a few old cowboys. There was one in particular that sticks in my memory. An old drunk. Told me his story, wept throughout. In the end, he told me to go home. Go home boy.
If God has a voice it is in the lowly, in those we often ignore. In fact, some of the greatest lessons of my life have come from the homeless and the poor.
I was in a Denny's in AZ...ordered a coffee...there was a woman and three kids, obviously poor. I went to the bathroom, came back and the they were gone and on the table was ten bucks. Ten bucks for a drug addict when you have kids to support.
My life is full of these things. Too many to write here.
Good poem. Always, abraham

It's the hypocrisy that has always made it very hard for me to keep doing the church thing. This really struck a nerve with me and I could go on and on but I just hold back for now. Just wanted to say very well written and I like the subject matter. Hooray for the cowboy!!!! |

Great, timely and striking message Consue.
As a matter of fact, I know of a similar event that happened in a neighborhood's parish to a devout workman who sneaked into a church during his break to adore the Lord and was upraided - by a priest - for beig too shabby.
Ominous sign for clergy as well as the parishioners.
How many there are that shun the church becase of such mean and godless a disposition.
Cries to heaven. !
Criess up to God to give a lesson. And He does give lessons. Don't we experience them right now ??
Wonderful message. - a true God-send.May He bless you abundantly for it.
Thank you Consue
Love and peace

This nearly brought a tear because religion has taken people far away from the essence of christianity leaving cold comfort when there should be an unquestioning warm welcome to all regardless of who they are and where they come from, well written consue but a very sad reflection |

ah consue, again such mastery of your art.
not being the relgious type myself, i cannot say i have felt the "cowboys" situation in resentment. i believe god is to the universe as what energy is to life. to me god is energy, aside from his face painted throughout the bible.
this was a very well writtin, flowing, funny, beautiful peice. as i expect from one so gifted as you.
much love,
-andrew. |

It seems to me that most religions are the same. A way of controlling the masses way of thinking. Some good, some bad and a lot of hypocracy.
Beautifly writen. Thanks.....Apple |

Hi Connie,
A fine story with a clear message.
I once walked into a synagogue, blessed myself,
started to say the rosary, and people began
to edge away from me ................. then I woke up!
(Sorry - couldn't resist it).
