The Great American Dream

Contributed by Cancer on Friday, 18th April 2003 @ 09:05:00 PM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

hello there, please come in
won't you have a seat?
now if you're ready, i'd like to introduce
this perfect family
The Great American Dream

yes, families like this
are not hard to find
if you know just where to look
so without further ado
here's dad and mom
mischievous billy, and sweet little brook

dad is a big-time lawyer
he drives a lexus, and golfs on Saturdays
and if he keeps that serial killer out of jail
hes up for quite a raise

(did I mention that dad sees a hooker on fridays
and has a fetish for B&D
and when dad has enough money socked away
he's skipping out on the family
and moving to miami)

mom is the world's greatest cleaner and cook
with a passion for fashion, you see
her warm, cozy home speaks for itself
just ask her family

(actually, mom has a growing addiction to coke
and a 16yr. old lover on the side
and no matter how much housework she does
she can't shake her thoughts of suicide)

yes, my friends
everything is as good as it seems
right here inside of
The Great American Dream

billy has a 3.9 GPA
and, of course, he's a football star
college-bound, with such talent
he's destined to go far

(billy punched his last girfriend in the stomach
so that she would miscarry their "mistake"
he's actually a closet homosexual
with a crush on his best friend, blake)

brook is a cheerleader with a winning smile
an all around good christian girl
if asked what it is that she wants most
her answer would be "peace all-round the world"

(brook will sleep with any guy
who gives her the slightest attention
and in ten years, she will be found
in rehab for heroin addiction)

so you see my friend
this family might seem to live free, without a care
but, sadly, this Great American Dream
looks more like a Nightmare

This poem is outstanding, its so STRONG. What an accomplishment.
If you don't midn, how long did it take to write it? What triggered this outflow of sarcasm? Good job,
Kiirsten

Not as grabbing as some of your poems, but a very good poem nonetheless. What makes this poem so sad is that this is true in many cases. This has some very good insight. Keep on writing Roy.

Peace,
Joel
