Father & Son

Topic: FamilyPoems

Amidst the screams of an ailing mother
The clapping of dear family members
A tear rolled down his cheek
Tears of joy
Ecstatic, overwhelmed
A scorching wail resonates of the walls
A loud entry into the world you made

Held your hand
Led you on your first steps
Fall you would at times and stumble
But, relentless he was and supportive
Standing there
Omniscient
Always watching
Out on the catch lest you fall

Those warm loving eyes
Hugged you throughout
Those caressing hands
Held you in your times of joy
In your times of pain
In your times of need
Infinite selfless love
Free of charge
Catering to your very needs

Draw down on this love
Nourish yourself with it, you did
Years and years elapsed
And now, you stand tall
Independent
A young man.

Spreading your wings free
Roaming high and far
Exploring the valleys of life
Dreamy and delusional
Lifes lullaby plays in the horizon
A melody so enticing you cannot resist
Of love, joy and success
Blindfolded you whizz through
In the valley of love you plunge
In the valley of hope you swim
And in the valley of success you soar
But reality looms in the horizon
Of rivers too deep,
Of currents too high,
And of winds too strong

As you bump into reality over and over
Fleet back you would with scurrying feet
To the safety and haven of his embrace
Delve into his wisdom
Dwell on his history
Forget you do
That he had journeyed these valleys over and over

Sit back to be coached in the school of his memories
Scurrying away
Endless notes of timeless wisdom
An amalgam of lessons
Love, passion, joy and success he propagates
Of failure, anger and weakness he warns you

As you look into his eyes
You realize something is amiss
As you search his soul
You realize the glow in them is dimming
Whats astray? You demand
But all you get are silent answers
A sad smile and a pat on the shoulder

Son, time has seized to befriend me
As you listen, astounded, flabbergasted
The core of you starts to rumble
Your very foundation crumbles
Blinded you were to this day
Independent you envisaged yourself
But oh what a fool you have been

Comfort you long to provide
But how does one comfort his own very provider
Emasculated,
You long to run and weep in his embrace
Hide in the enclave of his boundless love

Wait.
You cannot.
Stand strong you must
Stand up tall
Take his hand and lead the way
Support him you must
As support you he did
It is time to pay your dues
As son, the roles are now reversed.

Transfixed you are by his eyes
Realization strikes like a bolt of thunder
Jostling you out of your stupor
Wake up kid
Hide the tears
Show me the Man in you

Comfort and console
Smile and laugh
Protect and engulf
What a theatrical farce
As fear grips you by night
You shake and cry to your bone
With no repose

Despite his ails, he feels you and says
Planted my seed I have in you
In that is my eternal presence
Smile my son
Stand tall
Head high
For you have made me proud

You yearn to unwind the clock
Nostalgic for your childhood days
But failure runs to meet you
The clock ticks on and on
With each tick you ponder
If only...
And in that is your answer
To the Lesson of Life
