THE PAIN OF WAR

Contributed by tamren on Wednesday, 15th December 2010 @ 06:06:42 AM in AEST
Topic: war

TODAY I WITNESSED WAR!
NOT IN THE BLOODIED KILLING FIELDS OF AFGHANISTAN
NOT IN THE LIFELESS DESERTS OF IRAQ
NOT IN THE HATE FILLED STREETS OF CHECHNYA
BUT IN THE QUIET OF A COUNTRY GRAVEYARD

NO BIRD SANG AS WE LAYED THE YOUNG SOLDIER TO REST
NOT A BREEZE TOUCHED THE TEARS OF HIS GRIEVING MOTHER
BUT THE PAIN, WE ALL FELT THE PAIN
AND THE QUESTION IN OUR MINDS?
WHY!!!

HIS COMMANDING OFFICER SAID HE WAS A HERO
THE PADRE SAID HE WAS WITH GOD NOW
HIS FELLOW SOLDIERS SALUTED THEIR FALLEN COMRADE
HIS WIFE STOOD MOTIONLESS HOLDING HIS NEW BORN SON
HELL MAKE A FINE SOLDIER SOMEDAY

THEN IT WAS OVER
HANDS WERE SHAKEN
CHEEKS WERE KISSED
CONDOLENCES PASSED ON
NOW HE LIES ALONE

TOMORROW BRINGS A NEW DAY
AND SOMEWHERE. ANOTHER FUNERAL

Well done! So much truth to it...no remorse for dead...powerful write...I like how you've captured all of it!

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
