Seeing America
By: Matthew Christian

what do you see when you look at America
do you see the flowers blooming in the spring
or do you see them wither and die
do you see a kid being born
or one that died before its time
do you see your favorite driver about to win the race
or a drive by shooting that just took place
do you see Martin Luther King saying I Have A Dream
or a young boy killed for his race at only the age of sixteen
do you see a mother carrying a baby on her back
or a mother that is addicted to crack
do you see a house that's under construction
or a house thats been burned to nothing
do you see the red white and blue
or a soldier trapped in a foreign prison begging for food
do you see a soldier that fights for freedom
or the atomic bomb that we drop on Hiroshima
do you see someone dying of old age
or a plane crashing into the world trades
do you see a country that pays
or one the is fading into because of sinful ways
do you see a county that still one nation under God
or a country whose economic crisis has caused its spiral downfall
do you see a country under God's praise
or a country that is suffering from AIDS
do you see a fireman that saved the baby last Tuesday
or a policeman shot on duty
do you see a country that stands by in God we trust
or a bible that is collecting dust
do you see the blue angel jet fly over head
or a twenty one gun salute because a solder is dead
do you cry for all the holocaust victims lost
or hear Nazis yelling for Hitlers cause
do you see a country where a soldier can put on a uniform and stand tall
or a nation who disrespects its heroes that who fall
do you see yourself on a beach trying to relax
or Pear Harbor under attack
do you see Rosa Parks refuse to move
or the challenger when it exploded on the news
do you see the miracle of Apollo 13 astronauts come home
or United 93 when the true meaning of a hero was shown

do you see a wrestler about to submit
or a man sentenced to death for a crime that he did not commit
do you see the stars light up the night
or a kid with cancer trying to fight
do you see Lincoln giving the Gettysburg address
or a platoon of soldiers under distress
do you see Muhammad Ali saying I am the greatest
or Kennedy when he was assonated
do you let your patriotism show
or remember the Alamo
do you see the rough Alaskan terrain
or a county ready for change
do you see a country where the Ten Commandments are obeyed
or is it all like a act that they put on stage
do you see a flag that flies high
or an eagle that soars into the sky
what do you see when you look at America
the choice is up to you

Nice capture and pairing of some significant historical events, social relationships and issues that reverberate in the American psyche. I am a natural born cynic but optimism keeps me going, so I will embrace it all, with hope for the good to last longer than the sad...
