like father, like son

To feel important, part of things
instead of outside looking in
the friend who everybody knows
can bring joy bounding easily
I know it can't be me

I reflect more, than inward glow
i'm on the fringe, a place I know
the margins I hold on to, to feel safe
I step back when I get too close
self loathing perhaps more than most.

My downward look, along with charm
can entertain, without much harm
at least that's what my friends, they surely think
but when alone the things I said
are analysed so deep within my head

I say and do things just to prove
I'm clever, with a witty groove
I revel in my fearless ways, energised by shock
but fearlessness it is a front with very little backing
my lines wear thin, material is lacking

when , oh when, will I grow up?
I can't live life like I'm a pup
one-liners are so tiresome as diversions
My family life I know should be my pride
responsible, why do I want to hide?

As a young boy I looked up to dad
the time he gave me as a lad
was pitifully small when I think back
these word prove that I'm self-obsessed, and sad
a reluctant mirror image of my dad.

As I was reading this poem, I felt as if my whole life was passing in front of me. Frighteningly close to the truth!

I've heard stories similar to this ( example: Cats in the Cradle). Still there's always hope to change.

we always have to deal with our parents habits, which are passed on to us. It's a pain.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
