the king is dead

Topic: Patriotic

The Standard Bearer drops his flag
The king is dead, his body dragged
across the valley floor by steed
his head removed, a callous deed
Proof indeed of who has won
In a time before the gun.
His followers retreat at speed
in all directions, fate complete
to the victor all the spoils
the standard burnt in cooking oil
old and young they lie there dead
the lucky ones, if truth be said
for far and wide a bleeding mass
stew in muddy fields to pass

the king is dead. Long live the king
victors followers do sing
and so, inventories to make
of stores and fields and ore to take
the vanquished lose their way of life
70 years or more of strife
as memories of other ways
cause friction as the aliens stay
until invaders formed a past
solid, weaved, attached to mast
their power cast out by the sail
their way of life it did prevail
expand or die, an empire made
partly funded by the slave
triangle of spore, cloth and rum
it's lands not met by setting sun
but freedom waited patiently
for cracks and fractures in the sea
an axis grew in power and size
meanwhile our special friend stood by
and watched as all was torn apart
doctrines of evil crossed the chart
the end of sail, replaced by wing
the king is dead, long live the king

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
