Rolling in and out as scheduled But not scheduled, On time but not timed By its own accord It is. Crashing, breaking, pounding. Taking rocks, gravel, sand From the rocks, gravel, sand Taking and giving Sharing intwined Like potlach As example. The whale eats the seal The seal the kelp The kelp the whale Decomposing. The bear eats the salmon The salmon the insect The insect the grass The grass the bear In time. Meanwhile It is Still coming and going Still sharing. Taking and giving. Watching. They are there They see it But they do not know They do not tell its story. Meanwhile I am not there I am longing I am here From here to there in time Meanwhile still- Taking and giving It is Still. I am there I see them. They are not there. I see them. I hear their story Through it. I see them Sharing and giving Like it From its example Potlach.

'Ozette Or Somewhere North' is a unique and engaging poem. I don't think it shows any 'roughness' whatsoever; or if one percieves such, then that roughness might well be the roughness of camping out in the wilderness. A rough proposition, to be sure. I am particularly fond of the style -- how words and themes repeat: that is what makes for form. Such repetition of themes is like HOME -- in any composition; how ironic to find it so visible in a poem about backpacking!
