''U'' As He Sleeps

At night, devoid of obtrusive, writhing movements,
the human form wriggles and shimmies
from constriction
into its most beautiful manifestation,
like a diva nonchalantly slipping into her sequinned dress.
He looks immaculately beautiful when asleep,
long eyelashes flickering slightly
and sliding from side to side,
movements reminiscent of
a slow moving spiky caterpillar,
obliviously trailing across a leaf.
Two unassuming swipes across his eyes
neither question nor worry.
There are no creases on his forehead
and the light glides off
his shiny eyelids smoothly
like ice-skating rinks after eleven,
just closed for the day.
As the mobile cleaning machines rev to a start,
a guttural growl flees from
his snoring soliloquy,
from deep within
the barbed wire prisons of the day.
