  Social

Pigeons and Politicians

Contributed by flavellm on Sunday, 27th May 2012 @ 05:43:39 AM in AEST
Topic: Holiday Poetry

Incredibly,
Meritocracy is preached by the ruling classes
whilst theres a continuing subjugation of the working masses
my social environment has shaped my minds landscape
and what a fulfilling experience it is, living on a council estate

Family instabilities
and no social mobility
private education
and more social segregation
rising levels of wealth inequality
and now a era of austerity
obsequious politicians at the feet
of a corporate and banking elite
the media add colour to the
abstracts that they find so fetching
a neoliberal masterpiece
that would leave any sane man wretching

A intelligent and urbane journalist
in her little bubble of self contentment
smiling like a hideous fool as she
types up her parochial assesments
that exemplify nothing
just her own ignorant resentment
lovely isnt it scenic and serene suburbia
pardon me but I feel im about to perturb yer
but what exactly do you know about my life
this old industrial heartland is rife
with unemployment and crime
and believe me those two things correlate, they do align
so pause for thought, people like you are too eager to malign
this towns never recovered from the iron ladies savagery
the hard-working and decent, thats where she callously aimed her canonry

It was once a pronounced community
now half my mates are on social security
We're the future not the flies in your ointment
21 years old, restless and desperate for employment
a council estate like this, well just look around
its like living on a social dumping ground
We're destitute of opportunity we're destitute of guidance
and you wonder why there's been a moral subsidence
We feel disillusioned and we feel alienated
we've been neglected and now we're being castigated

Towns like this are being cunningly used
to put a whole class in the stocks
they've closed down the mine the factories the docks
those were the industries round here that gave men jobs
now its all asbo boys, asbo girls, drugs and family breakdown and we've all got too much time on our hands in these fractured towns

and in the media spotlight
we are its selected sample
yet another accurate example
the tip of a ice-berg they claim
as they rationalise inequality again and again
there undeserving there depraved
there savages that can't be saved
there not like you and me
we're cultured you see
and in this self-serving and rapacious age
its just another way to keep denying a man a living wage

cunningly placed seeds from the tabloids are sown
preying on the dissolutioned and insecure, divides have grown
and like pigeons feeding in the cracks of a high streets cobbles
ourselves like them, over the crumbs we all squabble
just look at the smirks on the plutocrats faces
knowing our anger is being chanelled in all the wrong places

cylical poverty
victim of geography
consternation!
born out of frustration
a minds dilapidation
a life of deprivation
right now,
im off to get inebriated it helps
forget about being impecunious
later I'll listen to some Billy Bragg
a noble working mans confucius

Well holiday poetry it may not be but it's b***dy brilliant ! I take my hat of to yer ! I can't tell whether it's very well thought through and constructed or whether it's an instantaneous capture of feelings ... I always vote for the instant of genius myself ! Ace
