I really, really don't like that place, I fear You know...way over there...that somethin'stan They took my daddy that I loved so dear And they sent back a completely different man
My daddy was fun and happy, oh so nice He would tickle and tease me and laugh all the while And take me to the park to run and play If I was sad, he'd hug me til I would smile
Daddy was a soldier when he went away His job was helping people to be like me So other daddies kids could laugh and play My daddy said he's going so they could be free
He left and stayed away for so very long Daddy would call and talk til he had to go He never said what the bad ones did wrong All daddy said was that he loved us so
They sent back this daddy and said he was mine But this daddy don't smile or laugh, he cries instead Momma said cereal for dinner cause no money...that's fine She said daddy is still fighting a war inside his head
My daddy was strong and proud and so very tall He did everything to keep us safe from harm This daddy seems broken and really, really small And this one puts our money in a hole in his arm
I wish they would bring my real daddy back here And take this one back...he's just not right Bring MY daddy back...the one I love so dear So I won't have to hear my momma cry at night
I don't like that place...that somethin'stan They take our daddies and trade them in They send back someone that can't be our man Why they do that is evil...it's just a sin

This is really sad. I like the way it seems to be written from a child's perspective too. I'm not too fond of war either and sometimes wonder of what will come. There have been wars all my life it seems (I'm sixty). Will we just someday just blow ourselves all up? Anyway, I'm blabbering.
Really like the poem.
Thank you,
Tim

Yes war is sad and some would say necessary I don't see why. I was on the other side where your daddy was. Till this day it still haunts me and it requires a lot to be normal if one could ever be. I don't know how you feel and it would be a lie if I said I did, but I'm sure my kids do. This is a very good but sad poem. TFS
Greetings

very real clever title, its just not right the way men come back from war, all innocent when they leave believing they can make a difference, coming home fractured in so many ways, i've always protested war, fat lot of good it ever did, sent letters to the white house about those things they use that kill people but hey hey it leaves the buildings standing! who gives a rats ass about structures, not me, won't be people left to live in them, unfortunately war is timeless, it always has been and always will be, history repeats over and over, funny thing is humans are the only ones that kill not for food- but to be strong on someone else, for animals it is survival... thank you for sharing this poem, it is written in such a way as to touch the heart of all people everywhere, for who doesn't love a child?
