ASHES

Topic: DarkPoetry

The graveyards tell tales of lives poorly spent;
Taken before they met their intent!

The headstones quote homages WE chose to pay;
Vauge obscure platitudes chisled in grey.

Boot Hill in Tombstone tells tales of fate:
Hung by a Mob or Shot my Mistake

I wonder what lessons wed read on these stones;
Could some of them chosen last words of their own;

Warnings, apologies, final good-byes?
Verses unfiltered by family pride!

A graduate thesis, their final exam;
A lifetime of verse by the blessed and the damned?

---------------------------------------------------------

All that you own will soon fall apart.
If you nourish your wallet; instead of your heart

Dont raise your boys to be silent and strong
Give them permission to cry, and be wrong!

Own your mistakes, or lie here in shame;
Awaiting the ones who shouldered the blame.

Lower your face when denying the needy;
Or see in their eyes the face of the greedy.

Cheer up if youre dealt a hand that is hard!
Cause once youre here pal, youve played your last card.
--------------------------------------------

Its not death that haunts me; but silence I dread;
The words in my heart that will never be said!

Is there a someone who needs my embrace?
A word or a deed theres still time to erase?

What if tomorrow should be our last day?
What do you think our tombstones will say?

Dearly beloved? Or merely Here lies!
(So much for keeping our lifelong disguise!)

Will we have flowers, or weeds long forgot;
Or sorrowful memories of all we were not?

Each time we come here to visit bereft;
They will be counting the days we have left!

Weve been invited --and they know just when;
And should we arrive with no time for amends;

We may hear them laughing, (they tried to remind us!)
Or is that the gate closing slowly behind us?

Its only their welcome.. that rattling sound..
A chant from the dark and the cold of the ground:

Ashes to Ashes; Dust to Dust;
Live while you can;
Die when you must;

When it's too late; Youll always have us"!

Thought provoking and greatly written. A side of life we seldom think about but build life around. Thank you for sharing.

Or ......

''One farewell plea from this dirt-laid bed,
don't let the devil know I'm dead!''

Only for those who depart with guilty consciences.

A very interesting read, SW - not sure yet
what one I'd chose ....... but then, must give
the living the final say.

Enjoyed it - thank you.
