He spelled it, came out quite surly

Gang, on time is fifteen minutes early

Before we met him, he knew

Life was always on the go

We'd better have our ducks in a row

Before you go packing

See things before they happen

So began the season

Before I knew it, packed up and leaving

I remember this style working for you in the past, and it works pretty well in this piece, too. Wait, it takes initiative to get initiative, right? I guess we have to give to get and get to give...I like how you present an ideal of what "initiative" might look like, and drive home your point in those final lines.
