Caught in the gloam Of a semi-conscious state Seeking the desparate comfort Of cozen dreams The faint whisper of a siren's song summons Giving gammon to incorrigible need Beckoning back into madness Taunting me to reach out, to hold The nothingness that remains Hands slips through the ambient glow As a shape-shifted spectre smirks A hoax, a beguiling bathos Born of unendurable pain Be gone, leave me, I beg But the spectre shakes his head And the peace I seek from slumber takes flight Leaving behind the wakefulness I dread.
