"You've stayed so long you've begun to resemble all the things you should have left. " Who will love you if you smell of loss, of loneliness If between your thighs there is a wet, open wound Who will love you with a voice like the sound of burning cities Who kisses the girl whose mouth tastes of the desert; of thirst and absence Who will hold your hand if your arms resemble a withering tree; outstretched and barren. Who will calm the storms in your eyes No one No one loves the ones who stay They look too much like all the things we should leave

You have hit the nail on the head. Needly people attract caregivers. It's a lock and key match. Angry people attract peacemakers; cheaters attract people who want to earn their devotion. Women especially like to "fix" flawed partners.
Love shouldn't hurt or be one sided.
If you have nothing to offer, you will settle for someone who has nothing to give.
What is noble about staying in a bad relationship? I lose respect for those who do. ("no one loves the ones who stay")
There is nothing more seductive on either sex than self-esteem.
Flourish and you will have your choice of partners;
Beg and you will have your choice of others cast-offs. The message I get from this is: exemplify the person you want to find, and they will find you.
great message! Thanks for reminding us all!

Very well captured. You've taken a difficult concept or nuance and made it palatable and enjoyable to discern.
Quite a poem!
