Es CAR-GO

Topic: Nostalgic

The story of Americas the history of our cars;
Of Henry Ford and Standard Oil, and famous wall-street czars!
Back then they called them motor cars; Mercedes built the first one;
It zipped along at 55; a breakneck speed in 01!

Ford made cars affordable with interchanging parts;
Built 100 cars a day and won a nations heart!
P. Durant bought Buick out, just before the war;
David Buick died so poor he couldnt buy a car!

Durant named Buick GM"-- short for General Motors;
He hired a Swiss born car racer to help inspire his voters!
But racer Lewis missed the track and soon went on his way;
He left his name on GMs car; (the Lewis Chevrolet)!

By 1927 Chevy sales had outpaced Ford!
Stakeholders lost money; and Henry faced the board!
Henry Ford was fired from the company he started;
They changed the name to keep their fame as soon as he departed!

They named it for a Frenchman to win their buyers back;
(The man who founded Detroit); Antoine CADILLAC!

What goes around will come around and Ford would have his day;
The man who took his company would finally have to pay!

When this aircraft factory went bankrupt on the block;
Ford bought every single bit of Lincoln Motors stock!
And fired Henry Leland (the chairman of the board)
Cause Leland was the man whod fired Henry from FORD!

Many famous car names have had their glory day;
Models named for animals, or famous men they say!
Pontiac for instance was a famous Indian chief;
The Armys General Purpose (GP) car we nicknamed JEEP

The Mercury name was Fords idea: Messenger to the Gods;
And Swedish Airplane Limited changed its name to Saab.

The worst named car in history was Henry Fords, bar none;
You might recall the Edsel, named after Henrys son.

If you remember Bronco, Cobra, Cougar, Pinto, Marlin;
Cheetah, Mustang, Ram, Lynx,
and Impala darlin;
Then you recall the golden age of family road vacations;
When everyone packed in the car for schools out destinations.

We stopped to fill at Conoco, and Clark, and Union Oil;
Esso, Getty, Marathon
, the Flying Horse and Coyles;
We ate at Howard Johnsons, Stuckeys, Sambos, and at Tops!
The highway diners big and small, our drive-in eat/rest stops!

When freedom was an open road; vacations were to roam;
When gas was cheap and cars were big; and motels were our homes!

All because a man named Ford believed in industry;
A nation met its neighbors on wheels that set it free.

Ford was a simple man mine you, I do think.
I grew up not far from Detroit. As a kid I would walk past the very first K-mart, where they moved Ford/'/s honey moon house and made it a small monument.
Don/'/t let it bother you that Henry was a racist Xenophobe,
I suppose nobody knew back then that all the fossil fuels we put up in the air was just continuation of a bad thing that grew much worse.
The open road you speak about, well my mom born in 1923 grew up with one of the first auto/'/s from Ford.
Her parents didn/'/t have a car when they were born.
I don/'/t curse the Ford name for any of this.
But I was there when the city went to, you know what.
And I/'/m here now.
Climate change is real and a lot of dopes in Congress
who do not understand anything about economics remain. Cities and highways are cramped and we have an infrastructure now that is beyond repair.
The highway was built when people who were rich paid upwards of 80% in income tax to pay for it under Eisenhower, my dad was a marine, and my uncle died in WWII. I went to Greenfield village in second grade in
1966 where they had this house that Robert Frost once lived in.
You say industry, and I wonder. Just what it means to be industrious.

Peace!

// How cool is this? Well, I/'/ll tell ya/'/.

I got a history lesson packed into a very cool poem. A great way to learn. I really didn/'/t know a Cadillac bought Ford. heeheehee

Where/'/s my Oldsmobile? Oh wait, never mind, it/'/s a Saturn.

Thankies, Ms. Jaye! //

I liked the history lesson too, although Ford was supposed to have remarked, History is bunk!/'/

I wish the tuckermobile had made it, and not just have so many innovations stolen by the major car companies of the day (seat belts, twin wipers, suspension...)

Loved the poem, and I love my car, but not in that weird way...

As usual spectacular writing.
Why don/'/t you tell the gals of today this is a lesson on how to get a man. That said, nonsense aside you continue to amaze me and that/'/s pretty hard to do these days. Bravo.

James
