White and gray with tangled mane; Clip clop to every house he came; Climbing slow our cobbled street; Clanking bottles keeping beat.
Swaying gently, leather straining; rocking head the hill hes gaining; belching steamy labored breaths; watching for the next address!
Out of darkness, ghostly sight; House to house before first light. He knew each stop along the route; Hed stand and wait, but have no doubt; That when the milkman lolled about; The dapple would be on his way; Waiting just a house away.
He knew which children brought him apples; Stood and let them touch his dapples; Rumpled up his velvet nose; Pawed a giant shodden toe.
I was just a girl of three; When down the stairs dad carried me; To wait there in the dark of night; Til through the fog he came in sight!
But when he neared I filled with dread! My father laughed, I hid my head! Id lost my only chance to touch; This gentle giant I loved so much.
Once a city deep in sleep; Counted on his faithful keep; Below the purple morning sky; As soothing as a lullabye; Came the milkmans horse our way; and with him went our yesterdays.

This was wonderful Jaye.
The imagery was amazing and just how it really is as I live in Amish country and hear this daily. Your poem reminds me of my childhood as I was introduced to a great big steed when I was very young. He was stepping on my foot and I was to shy and reserved to say anything to the owner and it was a very painful event. lol
A lovely poem that brings back yesteryear/'/s memories.

Good ol/'/ milko - I loved the chilled glass bottles, and the aluminum tops were great for spinning.
Your cadence matches the clopping just so. thanks for the lovely recollection.

Wonderfully nostalgic, yet so readable to any generation. Has a touch of a classic about it. I feel that I should have grown up with your poem, and know it by heart. |

There is so much here beyond the story. A call to yesteryear I so wish for, but cannot go to.
The Melancholy Clop.
Brilliantly captured in your masterful style, friend of mine.

Dear dear Soft
How you bring a joyous tear to my eye. Of day long forgotten. Yet still part of me. How I remember the sadest when the milkman come down the road and past with out a peep. When I ask my mom was he here. The milk is on the step all four LTS, but how did it come about we never herd the cart. Should I not hear the news that day they took the horse away. Replaced with a battery cart to me not very smart.
A sad sad day progress broke my heart. Beautiful poem Soft. Loving greetings to you and all. God bless
Greetings
