Im only one person, Im only one man I do what I can with these two awkward hands I dont live in wealth; I drive an old car; Ill not pen a novel; Ill not pass the bar; I love those around me; as hard as I can; Im only one person; But I have a plan.
With no time for college I trust in my tools; Im proud of my children for going to school. Just want my kids to be smarter than me; Book learned, respected, and forever free.
I fear growing old; Please dont let me die; Before they have found their wings to the sky. That hope keeps me up and at it each day; Saving as much as I can of my pay.
I can put things together and take them apart; But I have no tool for a broken young heart; No wrench to turn off a flood of sad tears; No way to separate falsehoods from fears.
No measure have I of pledges unkept; Ive promised my soul if theyre safe as they slept. I never will know of their hearts inner sorrows; Cannot protect all their endless tomorrows.
Schoolbooks are stacked beside old steel-toed boots; A battered tin lunchbox; will dress them in suits. In second hand clothes; a 10th grade pedigree Please Dear Lord help them be better than me.
Idolized once in their sweet nave youth; They manage to love me though they learned the truth; I love them Dear Lord as hard as I can; Im only one person; But I have a plan. And I know life will take them much further than I; All I ask is to live until they can fly.

Love this poem but that very last line punched me. We don/'/t always get that wish. I hope the welder does. |

A beautiful piece of writing with your touch. A soft and delicate hand. Cohesive throughout and your lines draw the reader. Another great poem you have here. Awesome job
