I am afraid to sleep to only find myself burdened by a dream They bring me to many places but I just dont like the theme
I often sit here in sweat with flashbacks running through my head All I can see is people screaming clinging to their beloved that are dead
It was only minutes but it seemed like hours on end Why did they have to shoot at us our perimeter we had to defend
They just kept coming like roaches running at the sight of light Flares popping high above making day out of what was night
So many brothers to my left and to my right Blood being gurgled from a shot another battle buddy lost this fight
All hell breaking loose as we lay fields of fire Every time I go to sleep I return here with no desire
Many years have passed but war is forever in my head I cannot go to sleep because I still see the faces of the dead

Heart wrenching. Your bravery in sharing pain/grief is admirable as well.

I agree with ming. Well done Wayne.
Arguments and battles of the mind, and battles of the body come to us throughout our lives. The extreme of the spectrum with war and brainwashing leave us both destroyed. At least in a capability. There is hope however. I think that university of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson has mentioned in his lectures regarding psychology that there is ground to gain in restoring your sanity so to speak when it comes to such things.
To know the capacity of the human spirit, its body, its mind, and its choices, and accept that such things are always capable of being reality, but we prevent them in name of a greater good is a step for most with ptsd, but nightmares? That/'/s another battle of which I have little to aid.
All the best,
-Mark |

Gentlemen, I am a Veteran, I deal with PTSD and I have bad dreams at times, as well as other issues. However, this poem is not about me. I wrote this poem with the ability to grasp the words that explain what many Veterans are going through and have gone through, that have returned from war. I seriously appreciate your kind words. It/'/s not always easy to write how others feel or what others visualize. This goes further than just Veterans my friends. This can relate to Policemen, Firemen or any and all first res ponders. This poem was based upon what goes on in the mind of a Veteran returned from war, but as I said, there are others that can relate to it all to well. |

You vivid description testifies to your capacity to immerse yourself in others. Memories make powerful paths we walk many times, trying to fix them.
Your story applies to all that horrifies us, and honors those who face it for us. it also applies to rape, child abuse, and the social workers who see these images daily.
A grateful bow to a poet willing to speak to a difficlult issue. You have done so with grace, humility, and exceptional realism. Thank you for honoring our ability to cope, and our gratitude to those who do what we cannot.

Man is a senseless creature and will continue to be until he is the candle that has finally gone out.
I can/'/t imagine the horror of having those traumatic scenes replayed over and over again like a never ending movie reel but I know it does happen to some people and you have highlighted that perfectly here.
War is an abomination but it continues throughout history like a plague.
