Defense Mechanisms

Contributed by xHeathenx on Monday, 11th December 2017 @ 01:18:48 PM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

Flying under the radar I/'/ve been lost in deserts of double digits
Overcast upon me from the shade of a personality quaint
Cut my self on stone-cold double edged swords
Until I bled out into colorful puddles of finger paint

Everyday she looks into my eyes and watches as I compartmentalize
Keep myself busy so I don/'/t drown in the efforts of forging a prize
I just want to be great even though she tells me I/'/m perfect
Oasis of solace of unimaginable size despite my heart/'/s conduct

Illegitimate conduits of drive are my circumstantial circuits
Waltz through churches speaking Greek as a postmodern mystic
Blankets of scars and old wounds with a naive heart for a styptic
Strength undermined by poor esteem and a tongue so cryptic

Emotions are long-abandoned kin that need to rehabilitate
Fear of life and fear of fear immobilize and irritate
Pain and turmoil are plenty and I bruise easily
But hiding and safety prevent the capacity to see me

The more intelligent among us obsess about their surroundings. Ignorance is bliss. Just put your emotions on auto pilot and let the world evolve around you.

I love how relateable this poem is. The last line is so true. Hiding and masking our emotions makes us feel safe, but it also prevents us from connecting with those we love. It is my belief that past relationships and negative experiences create a type of ptsd that can be very difficult to overcome and sometimes can almost seem impossible. Keep working at it though :) I think that is why so many people appreciate young love. It is a love that exists before any scars have formed, and is a beautiful thing to observe.

The writer seems to be sitting in the center of himself observing the mechanizations of his emotions swirling around him. Such a perspective is difficult to sustain, let alone describe in rhyme!
My favorite line is WITH A NAIVE HEART FOR A STYPTIC..
Herein lies the secret of children, who heal so swiftly from lifes early blows-- the gift of a naive heart.
This is worthy of re-reading to explore the nuances and assimilate the concepts that ring so true.
