Linger

Topic: FriendshipPoetry

what do I say when I don`t want to stay
and I want you to want me from far away
I want you there when I need someone there
then want you to go and I know it`s not fair

I`ve been living life on my terms
in my room where the lights are a galaxy
and pieces of you are scattered throughout
you linger in my bedsheets
I`ve been sleeping alone all these nights
in my bed where there`s room just for me
and memories are quiet all throughout
they linger in my heartbeats

how do I say that I don`t but I do
and what might be a lie is so true
I don`t want you at all, so please go
you`re a stranger to me yet all that I know

I`ll only have you here on my terms
this pocket of the world is all for me
I`ve created something that feels like home
you`re knocking on my front door
I only want this peace I`ve found here
this refuge is a safe place to sleep
there`s no doubt that restless feet will roam
you`ll find what you`re looking for

I can`t say if it`ll be me one day
but I hope arm`s length isn`t too far away
I needed to leave you and I am gone
but you draw me back in, it`s a strange phenomenon

I`ll keep living my life on my terms
helping you if you keep asking me to
`cause pieces of you take root inside me
brightening up all my days
I`ll keep coming back to see this through
supporting you if you want me to
`cause a part of you walks alongside me
never goes too far away

This is a clever fairy tale. A relationship when needed that serves to keep you from committing to yourself or anyone else; focused on the unattainable object desired.
While you linger, you cannot go on; you cannot be hurt again; you cannot be abandoned; you cannot lose.
Also, you cannot discover who you are, what you need; cannot love; cannot commit; cannot win.
Deep hurts can immobilize. When you are ready, you will find what you are seeking without needing to look behind you.
Your wisdom in this poem is a fitting beginning to your quest.

Softerware had many great points.
This was a very honest and well written piece.
You spelled it out with extreme certainty.

Dating websites are full of this mindset. Exactly as you wrote. Society tends to assume something is wrong with living a single life and others have not the time for a pet let alone another person and then you have serial daters and users as well.

And then you have those with commitment issues and others who fear what tomorrow may bring. Nice job!!
