That Is Why I Followed You

Contributed by jamesstockdale on Monday, 26th February 2018 @ 05:36:43 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

I followed an old man down the street
Rather quietly and discrete
I always had a notion we/'/d once meet
He had thick gray hair and was acutely aware
He wore a red ball cap that read United Way
Thick rimmed glasses so he could see close
But not far away, I guess he preferred it that way
We stopped at a sign at the end of the street
Finally we did meet
He smiled and said hi
His face turned beet red when I started to cry
He had no words to say
But just couldn/'/t turn away
He looked me over rather confused
Me, I didn/'/t care cause I had nothing to lose
He said cheer up sonny if you want I can say something funny
I told him I had a joke for him as well
He smiled and said please do tell
I told him I once had a plan
To walk downtown and follow an old man
I/'/d meet him at the crosswalk
Say hi and get in a little small talk
When I got his attention, I thought I/'/d mention
I/'/m the son he never knew
That is why I followed you

You sure sneaked that ending in on me! Now I have to re-read to see it from a different perspective. At last, the crying makes sense!
Great story James. Happy ending one hopes, but again, as is your style, you leave the finale to your readers imagination! Food for thought!
