Bullfight Fountain

Allow me to throw
My pennies in the ring
If you dont agree,
Then I never said a thing.
The fountain needs
A good scrub-down,
And coins can be
Raked up.
Our friend the bull
Is lying there,
And he looks mad,
Roughed up.
Tonights a sacred night
Under a sacred moon
Lets drink up my Chartreuse tonight
And eat my macaroons.
The gates of Hell were broken down
The boxing match is soon
And fisticuffs shall say for once
If we are blessed or doomed.
Christ has wagered all our souls
To save what Satan stole.
Whose collection of followers
Will be made lost or whole?
Our salvation put at risk,
who will attain their goal?
Go figure, Fox would televise
The bout to end the world.
The bull is loosed upon the pair
Who ruin it outright.
Nothing here could stop him
From winning the big fight.
And Caesar looks upon the crowd
And smiles with delight
As Sin and Glory duke it out
For this most precious right.
They waver back and forth between
For some eleven rounds,
But neither of the fighting kings
Can knock the other down.
Their worshippers are looking on
And cheering for their crown
But silly time has slipped away
And Sin is gaining ground.
This battle has been raging on
For twenty thousand years,
And still their stamina upholds
Amidst the roaring cheers
And who will win our dying race?
Will it be Dreams or Fears?
You'll never know. This fight won't end,
But this poem stops here.

| This leaves a lot of questions. Like who is caeser? A follower like the rest of the crowd? And why 20,000 years rather than the more typical Christian notion of 10,000? Interesting |

| Well, I kind of pictured this fight taking place in the roman coliseum, like Caesar wanted to celebrate and honor the glory of his empire, and could think of no better way than to host a battle between the gods themselves. Sure he's a follower, but he's the one who arranged for the bout to be moved to the coliseum from wherever it was before. Also, the popularization of Christianity was such a major thing for the roman empire that i figured the coliseum would make a fine setting for the poem. As for you last question, i am well aware of the christian view that the world is somewhere between 14-16 thousand years old, but as a believer in evolution and not creation, it is my understanding that the earliest permanent human settlements, and the first glimpses of civilization appeared somewhere between 20-30 thousand years ago, and so i just picked the number 20,000 and threw it in the poem to suggest that that is how long humans have had enough self-awareness to know right from wrong and make decisions based on that.
