Hard outer shell
impervious to advancement.
Layer upon layer,
years plus years
built up self-hatred.
Life lived on a single level.
Disallowing others to enter,
for fear of the rejection
that is sure to follow.
A mask,
cold and heartless.
Showing only gray.
True colors bottled up.
The rainbow that is me,
trapped, choking,
struggling to escape.
Fear and self-loathing,
guardians of my pain.
So many
think me heartless.
God and few others
know the truth.
I have a heart.
Boundless love
and deep
compassion
reside in me.
Yet I am too cowardly to reveal it.
I feel a change coming.
