Sun Kings Three

Contributed by Barry_William_Metcalf on Sunday, 21st September 2003 @ 12:35:00 PM in AEST
Topic: dedicatedpoems

Almost fifty years ago,
three young men chanced to meet,
recording for Sun Studios
in Memphis Tennessee.
Here they found their destinies,
each in his own distinctive way,
by entertaining crowds galore,
embarking on careers of vast acclaim.

Brooding Johnny was the eldest,
his baritone rich and pure,
singing songs of teenage angst,
intermixed with country greats.
I Walk the Line will long resound,
in the minds of happy revellers;
while A Boy Named Sue will forever live
in the hearts of the underdogs.

Myopic Roy came next in age,
his style operatic and tragic,
commencing solemn, sad and quiet,
before climaxing in powerful crescendo.
Only the Lonely became the anthem of
those whod climbed loves heights and lost,
while Oh, Pretty Woman epitomised
feminine beauty throughout the world.

Energetic Elvis wowed the girls,
his voice both sweet and seductive;
with swivelling hips and winsome smile
he captured the worlds imagination.
Jailhouse Rock won a million fans,
for a mommas boy with attitude,
and the ballad, Are You Lonesome Tonight
conquered those who doubted his talents.

Each a king of definitive styles,
yet all with a common beginning;
contributing much to our lives over time,
their deaths leaving society wanting.
Elvis slipped away in inglorious style,
yet his songs remain entertaining;
Kentucky Rain, such a haunting refrain,
Suspicious Minds continues to rock us.

Ere Roys sudden death, a Wilbury founder,
audiences demanded he sing golden oldies;
Crying broke hearts, reduced women to tears,
and Running Scared left audiences shattered.
Now Johnny has gone, the trios united,
I riffle my record collection,
searching for truth in Folsom Prison Blues,
and finding it in Come in Stranger.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
