the shifting of sins
from one hand to the other
devious collaborators wait
learning where and when to strike
between the collarbone and the rib
when darkness falls like a leaf
vulnerable in that desolate hour
when memory falters
and sleep invites dreams
crowded with meanings
relentless blood-soaked poachers
steal what little you have left
leave you clinging to the rocks
while the rain beats on your head
misunderstanding is your handmaiden
with her rough tongue crude hands
the only gift that you will get
comes from long distances
threading through your heart
a worm of insidious desire
crawling into your fevered brain
undone by circumstance
lying awake in blank stare
smoke curls up to the ceiling
from lips that kiss despair
