Abigail and the Sparrow*..........Part One!

Contributed by Glo on Saturday, 27th September 2003 @ 06:05:00 PM in AEST
Topic: StoryPoetry

Yesterday I took a walk, just to get some air,
I needed time to clear my mind.
This particular road I traveled along, one could tell it wasn't traveled very much,
There were overgrown weeds, litter all around and such.

I kept going, because my curiosity wanted to see where this road ends?
Not knowing that by days end, I would meet a Special Friend.
Going on further through very low branches, which were all entwined.
Leads me to believe that this road has been deserted for quite some time.

Enjoying my walk alone, all at once a Little Sparrow......which was sitting in a tree,
Singing a song so sweet, he flew ahead....then looked back at me.
Sensing something up ahead, he wanted me to see,

Finally making it to the end of the road, I looked to my right.............
There was this Old Deserted House a ways back off the road.
The Sparrow flew near the house, again he turned and looked at me,
He landed on a limb of an Old Chestnut Tree.
This house from the looks of it has some history.

Pillars standing out in front, for years refusing to fall.
A Moss covered Lion Statue still making himself known to all, who ventures his way.
As I came closer to the house, the Sparrow still in the tree,
He was singing his beautiful song, but this time not alone........................

I thought to myself, are my ears playing tricks on me?
Along with the Sparrow a voice so sweet, a voice that could only come from Heaven!
There standing under the Chestnut Tree, a Little Girl.......about six or seven.

She looked at me and said "Hi, my name is Abigail, did you come to play?
I replied, "not really, are you hear all alone?"
She said "Yes, my Parents went to town to get some supplies.
They should be back by the end of the day!"
Play with me for a little while, I know that you can't stay.

We played hide and seek, hop scotch, together we had so much fun.
Time went so fast," it's getting late, soon I'll have to go",
Abigail had this look in her eyes, and said "I know."
Before I turned to leave she asked "Can you come back and play sometime?"
My reply was "Sure, today I met a Special Friend".
A nice walk was all I had in mind.

She walked me to the road, we said our good byes,
All the fun we had today, yet there were tears in her eyes.
I reached in my pocket for a tissue, to catch her falling tears.............
With tissue in hand I turned to her........she disappeared!

Standing there for a moment, trying to figure out,
Abigail was there...........of that I have no doubt.
A feeling of calm came over me as I walked away.

Today for me was a wonderful mystery.
I told some Old Timers in town about my walk today.............................
They looked at each other, then Mr. Willie asked, ""You don't know about that house, and it's history?"
Sit here on the bench I'll tell you what I know,
That unkept road is no place for you or anyone to go.

Anyway some fifty or sixty years aback..........
Mr. and Mrs. McDonald was traveling down the road,
There was a railroad and depot station running back then,
While attempting to cross the track, their car stalled, the train whistle blew............
But couldn't stop in time, killing both of them.

They had a child, a little girl I believe.............
Legend tells it that she died on Christmas Eve.
Sneaking down the stairs, trying to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus,
She tripped and fell down the stairs,
Her little body couldn't take the fall.
Her parents laid her to rest under the Big Chestnut Tree so tall.

After listening and taking it all in, now I understand,
I wasn't imaging the events that happened on my walk today.....................
Though the years have passed, for others time stands still.

Will I ever go back on that lonely unkept road?
The road that brought me so much peace within?
The Sparrow, who sings his songs so sweet,
Will be there to guide me to the end.
Wondering what games we'll play together.......
Myself and Abigail, my new friend.

Do You Believe?

Dear Glo,
What a great and inspiring poem. I love story poems...they can be so touching, so real, so true, anything you want them to be. What a wonderful story, I was intriqued, could hardly wait to see what happened. Yes, I believe Glo, You can make houses talk, and hats, and ducks and squirrels, even ants....you have a marvelous talent here, I hope you continue to tell stories with prose....not everyone can you know. I enjoyed yours so much. Thank you
