DON'T GET ME WRONG

I look around
and see you there
can't really believe
it's you that cares.
I see those two
my remaining ones
and simply realize
all that's been shunned.
You're standing tall
they glow so bright
my family here
can feel so right.
It took some time
to go day by day
trust in no one's faith
keeping demons at bay.
How many times
I'd run to see
were they still breathing
are you still resting near me.
This time of year
makes me reflect
upon all I've lost
and did once expect.
I'd wish upon hope
to change some things
have a choice for once
and keep those to cling.
I still feel empty
despite what's in my hands
all the inherent losses
have taken away my stand.
Don't get me wrong
I'm thankful for all I have
but nothing in this world
could replace or be a salve.
So when you see me today
just sitting and crying there
you don't really have to worry
I'm just remembering life's never fair.
