The Proper Procedure
Hannah Madgen, a 21-year-old Uvic student, died in hospital Sunday morning as a result of a serious head injury. She was crossing Oak Bay Avenue earlier that morning when she was hit by a taxi
Movie tickets, untouched on the table... In the shadows, she huddles, convulses, in her armchair, phone off the hook where dropped. They had plans. Eyes red, distended, the deluge of tears cannot clear the injustice.
Photo albums lie. Stained yellow pages, ragged edges, preserve Imortally scattered on the discolored carpet. A child, bouncing pigtails, her contagious smile, radiant sunlight.
Clad in flowing blue, holding a high school diploma, a more experienced smile, emanates anticipation.
A mother is still eyes staring, glazed, as she silently turns the pages of the albums.
A salt and peppered border collie lies extended on the sticky linoleum, eyes unstraying from the glimmering steel food bowl, licked clean time and time again.
A car door slams. Velvety ears perk up, a mad scramble for the door to sit, eyes shining, waiting expectantly.
Stacks of disregarded papers conceal the flimsy white table. Yellow florescent lights flicker and buzz overhead. The Proper Procedure. Charges may be pending Stomach knotted, bologna sandwich and instant coffee left untouched, the cab driver sits, head bowed. A cigarette burns, neglected in a crowded ash tray, as he blindly fumbles for another.
A drivers license lies halved nearby, scissors still in hand.

Yes this is truly a sad thing to happen...even for the cab driver. At one of the high schools I went to a boy was hit crossing the zebra crossing and he died in hospital...then there was someone who I didn't know hit near my house and they died instantly. It's the hit and runs that are so saddening. Hope everything will be better for that family and friends...you and your mum too. Take care.
