Around Thanksgiving time, when the snow is deep, West of Cheyenne, in Wyoming land. Near a very steep hill, close to a large farmland. I saw a Daddy penguin and his son, "Wren" snowshoeing together, and jabbering like people. For you see that's what penguins many times are mistaken to be....tiny little men.
"Dad," jabbered little Wren, "Are we Penguin?" "Yes, indeedy, boy, we are Penguins fine! There are many different Penguins, son, our relatives are known as "Emperor," shoreline. "But Dad I'd rather be the Pigmy Penguin?" "Well, now, where did you ever get a notion like that one Wren?" "My cousin Polly Penguin told me she thinks they are the smallest, and cutest too!" "You can tell your cousin for me, they are easier to eat by the big seals who rule! You are the largest Wren, and I'll teach you how to fend...... When you stand by a shoreline and watch the water, don't descend yet....... Those old seals are clever, they let one go by making the others think they are safe. Then most standing near will dive in, and, that's when they are the most unsafe! Do you under that concept , Wren?" "Sure do Pops, I'm a good listening Pen!"
"Now when you to pick your mate, Wren, First you go get yourself a pretty rock, have you got that? "But what for Pop?" "Because you drop it right in front of your lady penguin dear. But you have do this with fear....'cause all penguins look alike son. You can't tell the men from the girls so get ready to run!" "You mean I might drop it in front of a big male?" "That's right, and those big bruisers ain't for sale!" "That's what happened to me before I got you!
Now I'm telling you son, don't go to marrying until you have big enough feet too! Your Mom and I carried you around in an egg. It was 55 below, and we couldn't let you drop on the ice, so we held you in our feet and leg. First your mom would go feed in the ocean, then come back and take over for me, so I could go eat in the sea!"
"You want to really think it over seriously if you decide to get married, it ain't easy! Standing and holding those eggs in blizzards, and gales gets real breezy! Your Mom can only lay one egg, you see..... So if we let you get cold, or lose hold.... slip a foothold, and you roll ice-cold, there's no room for console. You have to start all over again...... in those terrible cold temps below!"
"Thanks Dad for the talk, I'm getting a little hungry for our Thanksgiving Shrimp Stew, are you? Then his Dad said, "There's just one more thing I'd like to discuss before we head on home, OK?" "Sure Dad what's up?" "Well, you know folks make fun of penguins because of the funny way we walk... They compare us to some "Charlie Chaplin" fellow, who walked with his feet out to mock! I just wanted you to know that your Mom and I really.....really think alot of you boy! So when they laugh at you sometimes, you just remember how careful we were with your egg, so you didn't destroy! Don't forget ever, how much we love you too! Why Wren, you're a fine specimen of a penguin, and we're very proud of you!" "Thanks a lot Pop!" said Wren,
"Now let's head on home and eat some of your Mom's good Shrimp Stew.... Give her our thanks for you, she's a very fine penguin too!

I like it, but the only word that comes to mind is 'whimsical'. Somewhat appropriate, and befitting of this piece. Well done, a nice light-hearted change of pace. Thanks for sharing!

Papas are papas they speak to their kids,
Exactly like papa pen, he spoke to his,
Until they get married the papas hold reign,
Then wifey takes over and holds reign, again |
