An old canal crossing a marsh 'twixt oil works and the sea. the loneliest unromantic spot you'ld never wish to see
And yet a pair of swans chose it to raise a family among the reeds, forgotten, as peacefull as could be
Year on year each springtime they transformed the scruffy scene sereenly cruising up and down assiduous, they'd preen
Then followed little signets not more than three or four dashing, thrashing to and fro scrambling up the shore
The young birds grew so quickly desparate to be a swan Then one day like the autumn leaves the family were gone.
It wasn't sad, it wasn't bad not something there to fear t'was rather something to be glad for they'd be back next year
And so it went on every year too many to remember Our marraige parallel to theirs from April to November
But time, the thief of memories had yet to make his "tally" ............................................... The male was stood a'top the bank staring up the valley
His gaze it never budged an inch for days and days and then some focussed on the valley out of which she'd come
He only stayed a lonely month and never came again We pray for just a few more years before we share his pain

Oh Bob, what a thoughtful write, and loving too, to share your beautiful story about a Swan and parallel it to you. Yes, Death is such an enemy for Swans, and all alive...
For we are left alone and must survive.
This poem was very touching, sad and true. There comes a time when one must leave,
I always prayed , selfishly hoping I'd be the first to go, enemy my foe.
Your poetry is so filled with images, that pulled at my hearts strings.....such as he just stood looking there for her. It takes years to realize that they are gone.
You did really well Bob...I've read it 3 times.

I really like the comparason between nature and humans especially the swans, the last three stanzas were achingly good. It must be an incredible thing to have spent your life with someone like that, thanks for sharing.
Ive fed a family of swans for 3 years last year they beautified the canal and cut away all the vegitation, I didnt think the swans would come back but there i spotted a big healthy signet there 2 weeks ago :) |

Dear Bob, After all the praise you've received for this poem, what else could I say?
I have often thought what will it be like when my big, old swan is gone. How will I go on? How long will it take me to just go on living, as we have been together more than 2/3 of my lifetime? You really grasped and related the story well. Friend, Bizzy |
