a child of malice and doubt

Contributed by Cancer on Thursday, 4th December 2003 @ 12:34:22 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

we cry, "i am an individual"
we are right, but we are wrong
we are individual pieces
of the collective pile of ***** that is mankind
but that is as far as our individuality goes
being different doesn't make you an individual
it just makes you easier to single out

we cry, "i love you"
but, how can you know what love is
when so many base it on other people's words
so often we ask of others,
"how do you know when you're in love?"
their answers vary, but we still follow
the dumb led by the dumb led by the dumb
love isn't something you know that you feel
love is something you feel that you know
and you don't
love is one part desperation
two parts appreciation
and, in some cases,
three parts longing for fornication
nothing special, nothing amazing
just crude human desires
dressed up for show

if i kill my neighbor, because he annoys me
you call me a savage
an animal
a killer
yet, you sit back in your armchair
and cheer on our "leader"
as he orders the annihilation of a country
in retribution for the actions of a small group
you reply, "that country hated us. they laughed at our loss"
my town hates a neighboring towns high school football team
does that give them free reign to come destroy our town
kill our citizens, set themselves in a seat of power?
but i guess it's ok
as long as they promise to help re-build, huh?

you say, "this is the devil's work"
but who are you to say who the devil is
does your book not promise
that satan will appear as something pleasing
something good, something that will appeal to you?
then how do you know
that your god is not, in truth, the devil
he seems to appeal to you, he seems to please you
what makes you so sure that
all the times you thought god was speaking to you
it wasn't the devil, manipulating your weak mind

how do you know
that everything you "know"
isn't wrong?

Quite nice. A little choppy in places, but overall not bad. A lot of the phrases stand out, especially in the second stanza: "the dumb led by the dumb led by the dumb". Again, for lack of anything particularly original to say, very nice.
