Clearing In The Woods

Contributed by Steve_Ralph on Thursday, 29th August 2002 @ 09:02:38 AM in AEST
Topic: DarkPoetry

For many a year its been whispered,
You avoid that there place if you could,
For its said that strange things are occurring,
In that clearing down there in the woods,

Each ten years its put on the market,
But the purchasers never stay long,
Like that newly wed couple that bought it,
To build their log cabin upon,

They say that she woke with the twilight,
Of course its only rumour I know,
But if you have the time then Ill tell you,
The way that this strange story goes,

She whispered they say and he heard her,
So he walked over to where his wife stood,
Gazing out of the window,
At the clearing down there in the woods,

He asked , what ails thee beloved,?
But she never made a reply,
Just pointed out there at the clearing,
With terror alight in her eyes,

He looked to where she was pointing,
But saw no cause for fear,
He said I cant see nothing out there,
Come back to bed my dear,

I have a busy day tomorrow,
I have to cut a hundred trees,
And thats going to take some doing,
Even for a lumberjack like me,

But no matter how he asked her,
She would not go to bed,
Just repeated, they will get you,
Yes they will just like they said,

He asked whos going to get me.?
What nonsense do you speak ?,
I bought this land, I own it,
I have the right to cut the trees,

The next morning as the sun rose,
Still she acted strange,
She wouldnt even answer,
When he summoned her by name,

In anger now, he shook her,
Shouting why wont you reply.?,
She said cut a single tree today,
And you will surely die,

The demons told me of it,
The spirits of the wood,
That clearing is a sacred place,
To an ancient sisterhood,

He said dont be foolish woman,
Theyre just wives tales that youve heard,
There are no such things as demons,
These stories are absurd,

And he cut the trees he had to cut,
Before the sun was set,
And returned back to the cabin,
His body soaked in sweat,

She still stood at the window,
Gazing at the woods,
She said you should have took the warning,
That we gave you, while you could,

You trespassed on our sacred land,
So now you have to pay,
Look out across the clearing,
To where her body lays,

Whos body lays, he asked her,
He did not understand,
It was then he saw a stain appear,
In the middle of her hand,

A brown stain that spread like water,
Till she was covered head to toe,
He watched in horror as the signs,
Of age began to show,

Lines forming on her forehead,
Teeth blackened and decayed,
She said you should have listened,
To the warnings that we gave,

Look over at the clearing,
To the sacrificial stone,
See that woman struggling,
As shes tied there all alone,

Upon a sacrificial stone,
Tied by her ankles and her wrists,
A woman struggled vainly,
In her efforts to resist,

Surrounded by the coven,
She pleaded for her life,
As the high priestess stood above her,
Brandishing a knife,

In a flash he was out of the cabin,
To the clearing that lay in the woods,
Wielding his axe like a madman,
Running as fast as he could,

When he got to the clearing he noticed,
There was now nothing there to be seen,
No woman, no stone and no coven,
Could it be that his eyes were deceived ?,

Then hearing a noise close behind him,
He turned to discover his wife,
Dressed in the garb of high priestess,
With a long ceremonial knife,

As they stood in the clearing together,
He commanded his wife to explain,
Instead she lashed out with the weapon,
Slicing his juggler vein,

He clutched at his throat for a moment,
Then sank to the floor, where he died,
His wife drew a pentangle symbol,
Around where his body now lie,

Then changing once more to a demon,
As the rest of her coven appeared,
Surrounding the stone and the woman,
Who writhed there in terror and fear,

Their ritual was almost completed,
To their master they offered her life,
Chanting the chant of the demon,
As they offered him this sacrifice,

The blood of a newly wed couple,
The flesh of a newly wed bride,
Is this story true or just rumour.?
I think Ill leave that for you to decide,

But whatever you think take my warning,
For the advice that I give you is good,
If youre a newly wed looking for dwellings,
Stay clear of that place in the woods.
