charging into the elevator
like a drunk on new year's eve
trying to outrun you
when i know you're holding me
keeping me in line
you tell me
i was never ready
when you came to pick me up
planned to leave you behind
but it never worked out
caught between your teeth
held my head against the wall
wouldn't listen to anything you said
determined, you coerced me
tempting me with kindness
i heeled like a dog
found i'd given you far too much
i sat rocking back and forth
staring at my shadow
until you hollered stop
i choked on the cough medicine
before coming up for air
